Property fraud – did you know your home could be targeted?

Property fraud occurs when someone tries to sell or mortgage a property they do not own by using stolen or falsified identity documents.

While it is relatively rare, it can have serious consequences for property owners.

One way to help protect yourself is by signing up to Property Alert, a free monitoring service provided by HM Land Registry. The service notifies you if certain activity is detected on a property registered in your name.

This can be particularly useful if you:


  • Own a mortgage-free property

  • Own a rental property

  • Live abroad for long periods

  • Have a property that is empty
